Everything You Need to Know About Moissanite

A complete customer guide to exceptional sparkle, durability and value.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a genuine gemstone made from silicon carbide. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so almost all moissanite used in modern jewellery is created in a laboratory. It is valued for its intense brilliance, colourful fire, durability and accessible price.

Important: Moissanite is not a Natural Diamond. It is a distinct laboratory-created gemstone made from Silicon Carbide. While it offers exceptional brilliance, durability and value, it has different physical and optical properties from a Natural Diamond.

Does Moissanite Lose Its Shine?

No. Moissanite does not permanently lose its brilliance or become cloudy from normal ageing. Oils, lotions and soap may temporarily reduce sparkle, but gentle cleaning restores its appearance.

Can It Be Worn Every Day?

Yes. Its excellent hardness makes it suitable for rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets and men's jewellery. The setting should still be protected from heavy impact.

Colour, Clarity and Size

  • Colour: Commonly offered in colourless and near-colourless grades.
  • Clarity: Premium jewellery stones are generally selected to appear eye-clean.
  • Cut: Good proportions improve brilliance, fire and symmetry.
  • Size: It may be listed by millimetres or diamond-equivalent weight; this is not the actual diamond carat weight.

Does It Pass a Diamond Tester?

Many basic thermal diamond testers may react to moissanite. A combined or specialised tester can distinguish it from diamond. Professional gemological equipment should be used for accurate identification.

Popular Shapes

Round, oval, emerald, pear, marquise, princess, cushion, radiant, Asscher, triangle and heart shapes are commonly available.

Care Guide

  • Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

A quality stone does not normally change colour over time. Its visible tone depends on its original grade, lighting, cut and metal colour.
To most people they appear very similar. Under certain lighting conditions, moissanite displays stronger rainbow fire than a Natural Diamond. Professional gemologists can distinguish them using specialized equipment.
